This beautiful young woman had meningitis as a teenager and was in a coma for three months. When she awoke, she was left with left facial spasm which is similar to how some patients with Bell’s palsy or Ramsey-Hunt Syndrome (Justin Bieber’s affliction) will recover. The spasm caused her left eye to be more closed at rest, and it would close completely with smiling. It also caused a deep chin dimple and the left corner of her mouth to turn downwards. She was referred to Dr. Griffin by her eye doctor due to Dr. Griffin’s specialized training in managing patients with Bell’s palsy and similar conditions.
We started out by using botox to relax her tight facial muscles. She also wanted to address her drooping eyelids, which is called eyelid ptosis. Dr. Griffin removed a strip of muscle in the left upper lid to act like permanent botox for that tighter left eye.
After surgery, she feels her face is more symmetrical and relaxed. She looks and feels great!
