Botox® to Treat Wrinkles
Botox® has been FDA approved for cosmetic use since 2002 and has since gone on to acquire cosmetic applications for several areas of the face for the treatment of wrinkles. It is one of the most extensively studied medical esthetic treatments and is approved for cosmetic use in 78 countries. To date, approximately 10.9 million vials of Botox® Cosmetic have been sold in the United States since 2002 making it the #1 selling product of its kind in the world.
What is Botox® and How Does it Work?
Derived from sources that exist in nature, Botox® Cosmetic contains tiny amounts of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein refined from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. Once injected, it relaxes the underlying muscle activity that is responsible for causing a wrinkle. Botox® does this by blocking the receptors on that muscle from receiving the message to contract from the brain. This process takes place gradually and wears off gradually. This means that there is a smooth transition from the onset of your results and their diminishment.
Am I a Good Botox® Candidate?
The best candidates for Botox® are interested in a non-surgical minimally invasive method of facial rejuvenation that involves no scalpels or incisions. Good candidates have realistic expectations. Additionally, ideal candidates are in good overall health.
If you have an active skin infection in the treatment region or are currently pregnant or breastfeeding, it may not be ideal to come in for Botox® injections. You can talk to Dr. Tolan regarding these issues during a consultation.
Patients who are looking to address cheek volume loss, thin lips, under eye hollows, and moderate and deep lines around the nose and mouth may be better served with our dermal filler injections.
Your Botox® Injection Session
Botox® treatments are quick, affordable and virtually painless. The process typically does not take longer than 20 minutes and is often shorter.
At the start of the treatment session, the injection sites are marked to serve as a guide and ensure precision. A local or topical anesthetic may then be applied to these regions.
Injections of Botox® Cosmetic are carefully delivered to the marked areas. The number of units varies depending on your esthetic needs and goals. Many patients describe the injection as a “light pinch,” if felt at all.
I love the results. Love them, love them, love them. I am going to get the peels and Botox from Midwest Facial Plastic Surgery & Esthetic Skincare for as long as I live. Wonderful. FIVE STARS! LOVE IT!

Botox® Treatment Aftercare
After your treatment you may experience slight redness, bruising, and swelling at the injection site. This is temporary and our estheticians can apply a quick mineral makeup touch up if requested! It is recommended that you avoid alcohol and heavy sun exposure for up to 48 hours so that bruising and swelling are not exacerbated.
There is no need for recovery or downtime after your treatment session. Patients can return to work and their daily schedule right after their session, and because of this, Botox® is often called a “lunchtime treatment.”
Your results will gradually set in over the course of the next 10 days, with full treatment results seen at 2 weeks. Botox® Cosmetic is recommended every 3-4 months to keep your results consistently smooth and youthful throughout the year. For the very best results, our Physicians recommend combination therapy – using Botox® and dermal filler together.
